| I remember it like it was yesterday, it was a breezy and sunny afternoon...i was in Mamacita's eating my third plate of fish tacos.. it was a tuesday, Mamacita's had all you can eat fish tacos on tuesdays....so i was settling up with Hector when my water broke....now i didn't have a car and i was by myself, and we didn't have cell phones back then, and even if i had a phone, i couldn't think of anyone to call that could come pick me up...(what i was doing out by myself so close to my due date, i'll never know....i guess it was those darn fish taco, i must have eaten my weight in fish tacos while i was pregnant....) so i start freaking out, because this is my first baby, so hector starts freaking out...and Hector did not speak or understand too much english, and my spanish just wasn't coming to me at the time...after about 5 minutes of playing charades, making sound effects, and screaming broken spanish, i learned that Hector had a car outback...so i get him to agree to drive me to the hospital...So Hector closed Mamacita's in the middle of the afternoon, we ran out back and got into his car, which would not start..so we needed a jump, and Hector runs to the street and starts flagging people down, but when they stopped he couldn't communicate what he needed, i thought he was going to pull his hair out, he was so frantic and frustrated... so I got out of the car and waddled to the street to assist Hector... when i say "assist Hector," what i really mean is i walked in front of traffic flailing my arms and screaming like some kind of crazy head "STOP STOP STOP" when the guy finally stopped and rolled his window down, i stuck my head in, and with firey eyes and the voice of a legion of demons, i yelled "I'M HAVING A BABY!! WE NEED A JUMP!!YOU'RE GIVING IT TO US!!!! so we get a jump and Hector speeds to the hospital, weaving traffic like some kind of nascar racer....we pulled into the ER and Hector carried me in...he was pretty strong for 5'2/120 pounds....i made it to the delivery room just in time for the doctor to walk in and catch the most beautiful little baby i had ever seen...Hector was there the whole time, he was really great...i wanted to name the baby Hector, but since it was a girl, i just thought that would be a bad idea...I mean could you imagine Johnny Cash singing "A Girl Named Hector." so i chose Lawana instead...what a day... . Happy Birthday Mom!!!! My mom is the greatest...i will fist fight anyone that thinks there mom could ever measure up to my mom...she is the sweetest, most giving, loving, and accepting person on the face of this earth...she does not know the meaning of the word selfish...(she actually does, i'm just making a point)..... if you know her at all, she has probably helped you out or touched your life in a positive manner...i could sit here and tell you 100's of stories about my mother "doing stuff" for myself, and numerous others...She is the face of altruism...I love you mom!! happy 34th birthday... cj | | |
| i am officially settled in the city of chicago...well minus any room furniture or "stuff..." however, it is a good feeling, i've spent the last 6-7 weeks doing something between squatting, couch surfing, and simply being homeless, but i never had to sleep outside, so all was well...i moved into my new apartment two days ago...i live here.... it is a pretty decent neighborhood, safe, quiet, but plenty to do...it is not too far from my place of employment, which is the coolest place to work, eat, or drink...i love it, and have become very happy there...my employers are amazingly cool to work for, and i've fallen into a circle of good people, it has a real family-like atmosphere, so i consider myself very lucky...all in all, i consider this a good move, i am not going to get rich here, but that was never the point, i'm in a position to learn a lot about the industry i've chosen to work in, culturally, the city has a lot to offer, there is always something going on...there are plenty of neat to amazing people, and i'm meeting a lot of them...i just wish the fam was closer, but they are going to come see me soon...RIGHT MOM!??!anywhoo, that is my latest bit of life, in a nutshell...i miss everyone, and love you all... by the way this is the coolest place i've found to hang out so far..i'm going there tonight to watch some gypsy swing...hurray c.j. | | |
